The petition

We are students, parents and teachers preparing for NEET UG 2027.

We do not know what exam we are preparing for.

At different times the government has said that NEET 2027 will move to a computer-based test, and that it will stay on pen and paper. There is still no official notification that settles it. About 24 lakh students are preparing for an exam whose format nobody has confirmed.

Students taking NEET 2027 started their two-year preparation in April 2026. Five months of that work is already done. Preparing for a computer-based test is not the same as preparing for a pen and paper test. The practice material changes, the timing practice changes, and the way you mark and review answers changes. Students who prepare for the wrong one will lose months.

Right now coaching institutes are guessing, schools are guessing, and students studying on their own have nobody to guess for them. The students who lose the most are the ones in small towns and villages, and the ones who are the first in their family to take this exam.

We are not asking the government to pick one format over the other. That decision belongs to the government. We are asking for the decision to be made, written down and published, with enough time left for students to act on it.

Five questions that need answers

None of these have an official answer on record today.

  1. Computer-based or pen and paper?

One official written answer that later statements do not contradict.

  2. One phase or two?

Will NEET 2027 be held once, or twice like JEE Main? If it is held twice, does the better score count?

  3. When will the information bulletin be published?

Students need a date they can plan around, not "in due course".

  4. If it is computer-based, where do students practise?

A free NTA mock test that uses the same interface as the real exam, available at least six months before the exam. Also a published centre plan covering small towns and rural districts. About 24 lakh students take NEET, roughly three times the number who take JEE Main. Nobody should be seeing the exam software for the first time on exam day, or travelling 200 kilometres to reach a centre.

  5. Is anything else changing?

Number of questions, total marks, negative marking, section structure and syllabus. Please confirm what stays the same and what does not.

Students spend two and many times more years of their life around this exam. They should be told what it is.

Please decide AT THE EARLIEST so that students have time to prepare for the ACTUAL EXAM FORMAT starting right now. Only 9 months remain in NEET 2027 if it is conducted in 1st week of May.

Signed by students, parents and teachers from across India.
